My Journey Through Infertility, Grief, and Healing
Life has a way of taking us down paths we never expected to travel. If someone had asked me years ago what my future would look like, I would have described a happy family, children, and a life that followed the dreams I had held since I was young. I never imagined that my journey would include infertility, years of IVF treatments, heartbreaking loss, overwhelming grief, and the challenge of rebuilding my life from the ground up. At times, I believed those painful experiences would define the rest of my life. Instead, they became the very experiences that taught me resilience, self-compassion, and the true meaning of healing. Today, when I look back, I no longer see only pain. I see a journey that transformed me into someone stronger than I ever thought possible.
My story began in 2015 when I was diagnosed with infertility. Hearing my doctor explain that conceiving naturally would likely never happen felt like one of the hardest moments of my life. Becoming a mother had always been one of my greatest dreams, and suddenly that dream seemed uncertain. I left the doctor’s office heartbroken, but I refused to give up. I believed that IVF treatment would give me another chance, and I committed myself to that journey with hope, determination, and faith.
The next seven years became a cycle of fertility clinics, doctor’s appointments, hormone injections, surgeries, medications, blood tests, and endless waiting. Every IVF cycle started with hope and ended with uncertainty. Every setback tested my patience and my emotional strength, but I continued because I couldn’t imagine giving up on the future I had dreamed about for so long. Infertility became much more than a medical diagnosis. It affected my confidence, my relationships, my emotional health, and the way I viewed myself.
Then, in 2019, after years of treatments and prayers, I finally received the news I had waited so long to hear. I was pregnant. It felt like every sacrifice had finally been worth it. I was told I was expecting a baby girl, and for the first time in years, I allowed myself to dream about the future again. I imagined holding her, celebrating birthdays, reading bedtime stories, and watching her grow into an incredible young woman. Those dreams filled my heart with joy after years of uncertainty.
Sadly, those dreams ended during a routine ultrasound appointment when my doctor quietly explained that there was no heartbeat. Losing my baby was the deepest heartbreak I had ever experienced. It wasn’t simply the loss of a pregnancy. It felt like losing years of hope, sacrifice, and the future I had spent so long trying to build. There are moments in life that change you forever, and that was one of them.
As devastating as losing my baby was, it wasn’t the only major loss I experienced during those years. In 2017, I lost my mother to heart disease. She had always been my greatest supporter, my closest friend, and the person who encouraged me through every difficult season of life. Losing her left an emptiness that followed me throughout my fertility journey. There were countless moments when I wished I could call her, hear her voice, or receive one more hug. Carrying the grief of losing both my mother and my daughter became an emotional burden that often felt impossible to bear.
Over time, the emotional pain began affecting every part of my life. I struggled with anxiety, experienced long periods of depression, and slowly lost confidence in myself. Years of hormone medications, emotional eating, stress, and grief caused my weight to increase to 195 pounds. I constantly felt tired, emotionally drained, and disconnected from the person I used to be. Looking in the mirror became difficult because I no longer recognized the woman looking back at me. I realized I wasn’t simply carrying extra weight—I was carrying years of emotional pain that I had never truly allowed myself to heal from.
Even after losing my baby, I continued IVF treatments because I couldn’t let go of my dream of becoming a mother. Then one unexpected event changed everything. After suffering a severe allergic reaction to one of my hormone medications, I was rushed to the emergency room. Sitting there, reflecting on everything I had experienced over the previous seven years, I realized I had spent so much time trying to save my dream that I had forgotten to take care of myself. That realization became the turning point of my life.
On November 27, 2022, I made the most important decision I had ever made. I decided that while I couldn’t control what had happened to me, I could control how I responded moving forward. I chose healing. I chose to stop measuring my worth by the dreams I had lost and start focusing on the life I still had the opportunity to build.
My healing journey began with a registered dietitian who taught me that real transformation begins with small, consistent habits rather than dramatic changes. I completed a medically supervised detox program and gradually rebuilt my relationship with food. Instead of eating to numb emotional pain, I learned to nourish my body with kindness, patience, and respect.
In January 2023, I joined a gym and started working with a personal trainer. The beginning wasn’t easy. There were days when grief still felt overwhelming and motivation seemed impossible to find. But I kept showing up because I discovered that consistency creates change even when motivation disappears. Every workout became another step toward rebuilding not only my body but also my confidence.
A few months later, I discovered Aquabike classes, and everything began changing. I found an encouraging community that supported me through every challenge and celebrated every milestone. Fitness became much more than exercise. It became therapy, stress relief, confidence, and hope. Every class reminded me that although life had broken my heart, it had not broken my spirit.
As my confidence continued growing, I challenged myself to become a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. Looking back now, I still find it remarkable how much my life has changed. The woman who once spent years sitting in fertility clinics hoping for good news now spends her days helping others become healthier, stronger, and more confident. Helping others discover their own strength has become one of the greatest purposes of my life.
On November 27, 2022, I weighed 195 pounds. Three years later, on November 27, 2025, I weighed 125 pounds. Losing 70 pounds was an incredible accomplishment, but it wasn’t the greatest transformation I experienced. The greatest transformation happened inside me. I learned that healing doesn’t mean forgetting the people we love or pretending painful experiences never happened. Healing means learning to carry those memories with love while continuing to move forward with courage and hope.
Today, I still miss my mother every day, and I will always carry love for the daughter I never had the chance to hold. Their memories remain a part of who I am, but they no longer define my future. Instead, they remind me to live with gratitude, resilience, compassion, and purpose. My journey through infertility, grief, and healing taught me that life doesn’t always unfold the way we expect, but it can still become beautiful in unexpected ways. Although I couldn’t change my past, I discovered that I could create a future filled with health, confidence, and meaning. My story is proof that healing is possible, strength can grow from heartbreak, and even after life’s darkest seasons, hope can lead us toward a brighter tomorrow.
