I Was Losing Myself One Day at a Time
There was no single moment when I realized I was losing myself. It didn’t happen overnight, and it wasn’t caused by one specific event. Instead, it happened slowly, quietly, and almost invisibly. Day after day, I became so focused on surviving difficult circumstances that I stopped paying attention to my own needs. I kept telling myself that things would get better once I reached the next milestone, solved the next problem, or made it through the next challenge. What I didn’t realize was that while I was waiting for life to improve, I was gradually losing sight of who I was.
Looking back now, I can see the signs clearly. I was exhausted all the time. I felt disconnected from the person I used to be. The things that once brought me joy no longer excited me. My confidence had faded, my energy was gone, and my focus had shifted entirely toward managing challenges instead of enjoying life. At the time, however, I thought I was simply being strong. I believed I was doing what I needed to do to keep moving forward.
My journey into that difficult season began in 2015 when I was diagnosed with infertility. Before that diagnosis, I had a vision of how I thought my future would unfold. Like many people, I carried dreams and expectations that felt certain. I believed that if I worked hard and remained patient, life would eventually follow the path I had imagined. When I received the diagnosis, everything changed. Suddenly, the future I had always pictured became uncertain.
The diagnosis brought emotions I wasn’t prepared for. There was sadness, confusion, fear, disappointment, and frustration. I struggled to understand why this was happening and what it meant for the future I had spent years imagining. Instead of giving myself time to process those emotions, I immediately focused on finding solutions. I convinced myself that determination and persistence would eventually solve the problem.
That determination carried me through years of IVF treatments. From 2015 until 2022, my life revolved around medications, procedures, doctor appointments, and emotional highs and lows. Every treatment cycle brought hope. Every setback brought heartbreak. Each new possibility came with excitement and anxiety. I kept moving forward because I believed success was always just one more attempt away.
At first, I thought I was being resilient.
In reality, I was slowly losing myself.
Every year, more of my energy became focused on circumstances I couldn’t fully control. My thoughts revolved around appointments, results, and future possibilities. The emotional weight became heavier with every disappointment, yet I never stopped to acknowledge how much it was affecting me.
I ignored my stress.
I ignored my exhaustion.
I ignored my emotional needs.
I told myself that I would focus on my well-being later.
But later never came.
Then, in 2019, something happened that restored my hope completely.
After years of trying, I became pregnant.
For the first time in a very long while, I allowed myself to imagine the future with excitement. I pictured milestones, celebrations, and the life I had spent years dreaming about. Every day felt brighter. Every possibility seemed real. I finally believed that everything I had been through was leading to a happy ending.
For nine weeks, I carried that hope with me everywhere.
Then everything changed.
During a routine ultrasound appointment, I learned there was no heartbeat.
The loss devastated me.
In a single moment, the future I had imagined disappeared. The grief that followed felt overwhelming. It wasn’t only the loss itself that hurt. It was the loss of every dream, expectation, and possibility attached to it.
The heartbreak affected every part of my life.
There were days when I felt emotionally numb.
Days when I questioned whether I would ever feel hopeful again.
Days when simply getting through the day felt exhausting.
Yet even then, I continued doing what I had always done.
I stayed busy.
I focused on responsibilities.
I told people I was okay.
I buried my emotions beneath routines and distractions.
Instead of healing, I kept surviving.
At the same time, I was carrying another profound loss. In 2017, I lost my mother. Her death left a permanent void in my life. She had always been a source of comfort, guidance, encouragement, and unconditional love. During some of the hardest moments of my fertility journey, I found myself wishing she were still here.
There were countless moments when I wanted her advice.
Countless days when I needed her reassurance.
Countless times when I simply missed her presence.
Losing her created a grief that followed me for years.
The combination of infertility, pregnancy loss, and the loss of my mother created an emotional burden that became increasingly difficult to carry. Yet instead of slowing down and processing those emotions, I continued pushing forward.
To the outside world, I appeared strong.
Internally, I felt exhausted.
The truth is that I spent years living in survival mode. I wasn’t focused on growth or healing. My goal was simply to make it through each day. I became so consumed by my circumstances that I lost touch with myself.
I stopped doing things that brought me joy.
I stopped prioritizing my health.
I stopped listening to what my mind and body needed.
Without realizing it, I had built a life centered around coping rather than living.
Eventually, my body forced me to pay attention.
After years of hormone treatments, I experienced a severe allergic reaction that landed me in the emergency room. It was one of the most frightening experiences of my life, but it also became a turning point.
For the first time in years, everything stopped.
The appointments paused.
The distractions disappeared.
The routines that kept me busy were gone.
And in that silence, I faced a truth I had been avoiding for a very long time.
I was exhausted.
Physically.
Mentally.
Emotionally.
More importantly, I realized I had spent years fighting for a future while neglecting myself completely. I had become so focused on what I hoped life would become that I forgot to care for the person living it.
That realization changed everything.
On November 27, 2022, I made a decision that transformed my life. Instead of focusing entirely on what I had lost, I decided to focus on healing. For the first time in years, I made myself a priority.
The journey began with small steps. I started working with a dietitian to improve my health and better understand how years of stress had affected my body. Then, in January 2023, I joined a gym and started working with a personal trainer.
The beginning wasn’t easy.
There were days when I felt discouraged.
Days when progress seemed invisible.
Days when self-doubt appeared.
But I kept showing up.
One workout at a time.
One healthy choice at a time.
One day at a time.
A few months later, I discovered Aquabike classes. What started as a fitness activity quickly became an important part of my healing journey. The classes gave me structure, confidence, and a healthy outlet for emotions I had carried for years. They reminded me that my body was strong and capable, even after everything it had endured.
Slowly, things began to change.
My energy improved.
My confidence returned.
My mindset became stronger.
Most importantly, I started reconnecting with myself.
The greatest transformation wasn’t physical. It was emotional. I stopped defining myself by infertility, loss, and heartbreak. I stopped measuring my worth by outcomes I couldn’t control. Instead, I focused on growth, resilience, healing, and possibility.
Today, when I look back at that chapter of my life, I understand something I couldn’t see at the time. Losing yourself rarely happens all at once. It happens through small compromises, ignored emotions, and years of putting your own needs last.
But finding yourself can happen the same way.
One decision at a time.
One healthy choice at a time.
One act of self-care at a time.
I was losing myself one day at a time.
Then I chose to rebuild myself one day at a time.
And that decision changed everything.
