My Journey Through Loss, Healing & Self-Discovery
There are moments in life that completely change who you are. Some changes happen because of success, while others happen because of heartbreak. My journey was shaped by loss. It was shaped by infertility, grief, disappointment, and the difficult process of learning how to rebuild my life after everything I thought I wanted fell apart.
If you had met me a few years ago, you would have seen someone who was exhausted physically, emotionally, and mentally. I was carrying years of pain that I didn’t know how to let go of. Today, when I look in the mirror, I see someone entirely different. Not because I lost 70 pounds, but because I found something far more valuable—I found myself.
My story began in 2015 when I was diagnosed with infertility. Hearing my doctor tell me that I would likely never conceive naturally was devastating. Becoming a mother had always been one of my biggest dreams, and suddenly I was faced with the possibility that it might never happen. Although I was heartbroken, I refused to give up. I believed there had to be another path, so I committed myself to IVF treatments and did everything I could to make my dream of becoming a mother a reality.
Over the next seven years, my life revolved around fertility appointments, surgeries, hormone medications, and countless medical procedures. Every treatment brought hope, and every setback brought disappointment. The physical demands were exhausting, but the emotional roller coaster was even harder. Each unsuccessful attempt chipped away at my confidence, yet I kept believing the next treatment would finally be the one that changed everything.
Then, in 2019, something incredible happened. After years of waiting, I became pregnant. For the first time in a long time, I allowed myself to imagine a future filled with joy. I was told I was expecting a baby girl, and I began dreaming about everything we would experience together. I pictured holding her, celebrating birthdays, and watching her grow into the amazing person she was meant to become.
Only a few weeks later, my world changed forever. During a routine ultrasound appointment, I learned there was no heartbeat. I lost my baby. The pain was impossible to describe. It felt as though every dream I had fought so hard to protect disappeared in a single moment. I left the doctor’s office carrying a heartbreak that words could never fully explain.
As devastating as that loss was, it wasn’t the only grief I carried. In 2017, I lost my mother to heart disease. She had always been my greatest source of comfort, encouragement, and unconditional love. Losing her left an emptiness that never truly went away. Throughout my infertility journey, I often wished she were still here to remind me that everything would somehow be okay. Instead, I found myself grieving my mother while also mourning the daughter I never had the chance to raise.
The emotional weight became overwhelming. Anxiety became a constant companion. Depression slowly took over my life. I stopped recognizing the woman staring back at me in the mirror. Years of stress, grief, hormone treatments, and emotional exhaustion affected every part of my health. My body became unhealthy, my confidence disappeared, and there was a time when I questioned whether life would ever feel hopeful again. Even during those darkest days, a small part of me believed there had to be another way forward, and that hope eventually became the foundation of my recovery.
The turning point came after I experienced a severe allergic reaction to hormone medication and ended up in the emergency room. Sitting there, reflecting on everything I had endured over the previous seven years, I realized something that completely changed my perspective. I had spent years fighting for a future I couldn’t control while completely neglecting my own well-being. In that moment, I understood that if my life was ever going to change, I had to become the person who changed it.
On November 27, 2022, I made the most important decision of my life. I decided to stop waiting for happiness to arrive and start creating it myself. I didn’t know exactly what healing would look like, but I knew I couldn’t continue living the way I had been. My first step was meeting with a registered dietitian, who helped me understand that true health involved much more than food. My mindset, emotional health, daily habits, and relationship with myself all needed healing.
I committed to a medically supervised detox program and began making healthier choices every day. The progress felt slow at first, but every small victory gave me confidence. As my physical health improved, I noticed my emotional health beginning to improve as well. For the first time in years, I felt hope replacing hopelessness.
In January 2023, I joined a gym and started working with a personal trainer. There were many mornings when I wanted to quit. There were days when grief still followed me through the gym doors and anxiety whispered that I wasn’t strong enough. But I kept showing up because I realized that healing isn’t built on motivation. It’s built on commitment.
A few months later, I discovered Aquabike classes, and that became one of the greatest blessings of my journey. I found a community that encouraged me, celebrated every milestone, and reminded me that I wasn’t alone. Fitness became more than exercise—it became part of my healing. As I remained consistent with my workouts and nutrition, my body became stronger, my energy returned, my sleep improved, and my confidence slowly came back.
The greatest surprise came when I discovered a new purpose I never expected. Less than a year after beginning my fitness journey, I became a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. The woman who once struggled to make it through each day was now helping other people believe in themselves and improve their own health. It was proof that healing doesn’t just change your life—it can also give you the opportunity to inspire others.
On November 27, 2022, I weighed 195 pounds. Three years later, on November 27, 2025, I weighed 125 pounds. Losing 70 pounds was an incredible achievement, but the number on the scale is only one part of my transformation. The greatest victory was learning that my worth was never determined by becoming a mother or by the painful experiences I endured. My worth comes from the person I have become through perseverance, resilience, and healing.
Today, I still miss my mother every day, and I will always carry love for the daughter I never had the chance to hold. Those losses will always be part of my story, but they are no longer the chapters that define my future. Instead, they remind me of how far I have come and how much strength can grow from heartbreak.
My journey through loss led me to healing. My healing led me to self-discovery. And my self-discovery gave me a life I never imagined was possible. While my story didn’t unfold the way I once planned, it led me to a version of myself who is healthier, stronger, more compassionate, and deeply grateful. Sometimes life doesn’t give us the story we expected, but it gives us the opportunity to write an even more meaningful one.
