The Truth About IVF, Loss & Emotional Healing

The Truth About IVF, Loss & Emotional Healing

When people hear my story today, they often focus on the ending. They see the woman who lost 70 pounds, became a certified fitness instructor, and appears happier and healthier than ever before. What they don’t always see are the years of heartbreak, uncertainty, and emotional pain that came before the transformation. They don’t see the countless doctor’s appointments, the hormone injections, the surgeries, the tears, or the moments when I questioned whether I would ever feel like myself again. The truth is that my journey wasn’t simply about losing weight. It was about surviving infertility, grieving unimaginable loss, and learning how to heal from the inside out.

My journey began in 2015 when I was diagnosed with infertility. Hearing my doctor tell me that I would likely never conceive naturally was one of the hardest moments of my life. Becoming a mother had always been one of my biggest dreams, and suddenly that dream felt uncertain. I remember leaving that appointment feeling shocked, heartbroken, and determined all at the same time. Although the diagnosis devastated me, I wasn’t ready to give up. I believed there had to be another way, so I committed myself to the IVF process with hope that one day I would finally hold my baby in my arms.

Over the next seven years, IVF became a huge part of my life. I underwent numerous fertility treatments, surgeries, blood tests, and hormone therapies. Every treatment cycle brought hope that this would finally be the one that worked. Every unsuccessful attempt left me emotionally exhausted. IVF challenged me in ways I never expected. It demanded my time, my energy, my finances, and my emotional well-being. While many people only see the medical side of infertility, very few understand the emotional burden it places on every aspect of your life.

Then, in 2019, everything changed. After years of trying, I became pregnant. For the first time in a long time, I allowed myself to imagine a future beyond infertility. I was told I was expecting a baby girl, and I dreamed about everything we would experience together. I imagined holding her for the first time, celebrating birthdays, and watching her grow into the person she was meant to become. Those dreams filled my heart with hope after years of disappointment.

Sadly, that happiness didn’t last. During a routine ultrasound appointment, I learned there was no heartbeat. Losing my baby was the most heartbreaking experience of my life. It wasn’t simply the loss of a pregnancy. It felt like losing years of hope, sacrifice, and dreams all at once. There are no words that can fully describe the emptiness that follows a loss like that. The grief stayed with me long after I left the doctor’s office, and for a long time I didn’t know how to move forward.

As devastating as losing my baby was, I was already grieving another profound loss. In 2017, I lost my mother to heart disease. She had always been my greatest source of comfort and unconditional love. Throughout my fertility journey, there were countless moments when I wished she were still here to encourage me and remind me that everything would somehow be okay. Instead, I found myself carrying the grief of losing both my mother and my daughter while continuing to fight through infertility treatments.

Over time, the emotional pain affected every area of my life. Anxiety became constant, depression slowly took hold, and years of stress, grief, and hormone treatments began affecting my physical health. I gained weight, struggled with low energy, had difficulty sleeping, and completely lost confidence in myself. Looking back, I realize I wasn’t just carrying extra weight. I was carrying years of emotional pain that I had never truly allowed myself to process.

Even after losing my baby, I continued IVF treatments because letting go of my dream felt impossible. Then one day, everything changed. After experiencing a severe allergic reaction to hormone medication, I ended up in the emergency room. Sitting there, reflecting on the previous seven years, I finally admitted something I had been avoiding. I had spent years fighting for something I couldn’t control while completely neglecting my own health and well-being. That realization became the turning point of my life.

On November 27, 2022, I made a decision that would change everything. I decided to stop putting my life on hold and start taking care of myself. I couldn’t erase the losses I had experienced, but I could choose how I wanted to move forward. That decision marked the beginning of my healing journey.

My first step was meeting with a registered dietitian who helped me understand that true healing involved much more than nutrition. My mindset, emotional health, daily habits, and relationship with food all needed attention. I completed a medically supervised detox program and slowly began making healthier choices every day. Those small changes became the foundation for a completely different life.

In January 2023, I joined a gym and began working with a personal trainer. Some days I didn’t feel motivated, and grief still followed me through every workout. But I kept showing up because I realized that healing isn’t built on motivation alone. It is built on consistency and the willingness to keep moving forward one step at a time.

A few months later, I discovered Aquabike classes, and everything changed. I found an incredible community that supported me, encouraged me, and celebrated every victory along the way. Fitness became much more than exercise. It became a place where I rebuilt my confidence, found peace, and rediscovered the woman I thought I had lost. As I remained committed to my nutrition and workouts, my body became healthier, my energy returned, my sleep improved, and my mental health grew stronger than it had been in years.

Eventually, I became a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. Sometimes I still can’t believe that this is my life. The woman who once felt defined by infertility and loss now helps others believe in themselves and improve their health. That new purpose has become one of the greatest gifts of my healing journey.

On November 27, 2022, I weighed 195 pounds. Three years later, on November 27, 2025, I weighed 125 pounds. Losing 70 pounds was a remarkable achievement, but it wasn’t the greatest transformation I experienced. The real transformation happened inside me. I learned that emotional healing doesn’t mean forgetting the people or dreams you’ve lost. It means allowing yourself to grieve while also giving yourself permission to keep living.

Today, I still miss my mother every day, and I will always carry love for the daughter I never had the chance to hold. Those losses will forever be part of my story, but they no longer define my future. Instead, they remind me that healing is possible, even after life’s greatest heartbreaks. The truth about IVF, loss, and emotional healing is that none of them follow a straight path. There are setbacks, tears, victories, and moments of hope. My journey taught me that although pain can change your life forever, it can also become the foundation for strength, resilience, and a purpose you never imagined possible. I didn’t get the life I originally planned, but I found a life filled with healing, gratitude, and the courage to embrace whatever comes next.
