Losing My Mother and Finding My Strength

Losing My Mother and Finding My Strength

There are some losses that change your life forever. Losing my mother was one of them. She wasn’t just my parent—she was my biggest supporter, my closest friend, and the person who always believed in me, even when I doubted myself. When she passed away, I felt like I had lost the one person who could always make everything seem possible. At the time, I had no idea that her absence would become one of the greatest challenges I would ever face. I also didn’t know that, years later, the lessons she taught me would become the foundation of the strength that helped me rebuild my life. This is the story of losing my mother, surviving unimaginable heartbreak, and discovering a strength I never knew I had. My journey took a dramatic turn in 2015 when I was diagnosed with infertility. Hearing the words that I would likely never conceive naturally was devastating. Becoming a mother had always been one of my greatest dreams, and suddenly that dream felt uncertain. Even though I was heartbroken, I refused to give up. I believed IVF treatment would give me the opportunity to build the family I had always imagined, and I committed myself to that journey with hope and determination. The following years became filled with fertility clinics, blood tests, hormone injections, medications, surgeries, ultrasounds, and endless waiting. Every IVF cycle brought hope, followed by fear and uncertainty. Every setback felt like another emotional blow, yet I continued because I believed my miracle was still possible. Infertility became much more than a medical condition—it affected my confidence, my emotional health, and every vision I had for my future. In 2017, while I was still navigating the emotional challenges of infertility, my life changed forever. My mother passed away from heart disease. Losing her was the most painful experience I had ever faced. She had always encouraged me to stay strong, to keep believing, and to never stop fighting for the life I wanted. Suddenly, she was gone. The grief was overwhelming. I couldn’t imagine celebrating another holiday without her, calling her for advice, or hearing her comforting voice after a difficult day. Her death left an emptiness that followed me into every part of my life. Every doctor’s appointment reminded me that she wasn’t there to hold my hand. Every difficult IVF cycle made me wish I could hear her reassuring words one more time. I realized that grief doesn’t disappear. Instead, it quietly becomes something you learn to carry. Then, in 2019, after years of IVF treatments and countless prayers, I finally became pregnant. It felt like hope had returned after years of heartbreak. I was told I was expecting a baby girl, and for the first time in a long time, I allowed myself to dream about the future. I imagined introducing my daughter to stories about her grandmother, sharing family traditions, and creating memories that would last a lifetime. Although my mother would never meet her granddaughter, I believed a new chapter was finally beginning. Sadly, that chapter ended before it truly began. During a routine ultrasound appointment, my doctor quietly explained that there was no heartbeat. Losing my baby became another devastating chapter in my life. It wasn’t only the loss of a pregnancy—it felt like losing years of hope, sacrifice, and dreams in a single moment. I found myself grieving not only my daughter but also the future I had imagined for both of us. Carrying the grief of losing both my mother and my baby became almost unbearable. Anxiety became part of my daily life. Depression slowly stole my motivation. Years of hormone medications, emotional eating, and overwhelming stress affected my physical health. My weight climbed to 195 pounds, my confidence disappeared, and I no longer recognized the woman staring back at me in the mirror. Looking back now, I understand that I wasn’t simply carrying extra weight—I was carrying emotional pain that had never truly healed. Even after losing my baby, I continued IVF treatments because I couldn’t let go of my dream of becoming a mother. Then everything changed after I suffered a severe allergic reaction to one of my hormone medications and ended up in the emergency room. Sitting there, I reflected on everything I had experienced over the previous seven years. For the first time, I realized I had spent years trying to hold on to one dream while completely neglecting myself. I remembered something my mother had always taught me: no matter how difficult life becomes, you must never stop believing in yourself. Those words became my turning point. On November 27, 2022, I made a life-changing decision. I chose to stop allowing grief to define my future. I couldn’t change my past or erase the losses I had experienced, but I could choose how I wanted to live moving forward. I decided to rebuild my life, one healthy choice at a time. My healing journey began with a registered dietitian who helped me understand that lasting transformation isn’t created through perfection—it is created through consistency. I completed a medically supervised detox program and gradually rebuilt my relationship with food. Instead of eating to comfort emotional pain, I learned how to nourish my body with care and compassion. In January 2023, I joined a gym and started working with a personal trainer. The beginning was challenging. There were mornings when grief still followed me into every workout, but I kept showing up. Slowly, exercise became more than a way to lose weight. It became a way to rebuild confidence, release stress, and reconnect with myself. A few months later, I discovered Aquabike classes, and everything began changing. I found a supportive community that encouraged me through every challenge and celebrated every victory. Fitness became therapy, healing, confidence, and hope. Every class reminded me that although life had broken my heart, it had not broken my spirit. As my confidence grew, I challenged myself to become a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. Looking back now, I still find it remarkable how much my life has changed. The woman who once spent years sitting in fertility clinics hoping for good news now spends her days helping others become healthier, stronger, and more confident. Helping people transform their lives has become one of the greatest purposes I have ever known. On November 27, 2022, I weighed 195 pounds. Three years later, on November 27, 2025, I weighed 125 pounds. Losing 70 pounds was a remarkable milestone, but the greatest transformation wasn’t physical. The greatest transformation happened within me. I discovered that strength isn’t the absence of grief. Strength is choosing to keep living, loving, and growing despite it. Today, I still miss my mother every single day. I also carry endless love for the daughter I never had the chance to hold. Their memories remain woven into every chapter of my life, but they no longer define my future. Instead, they inspire me to live with resilience, compassion, gratitude, and purpose. Losing my mother was one of the greatest heartbreaks I have ever known, but through her love, her example, and the lessons she left behind, I found a strength I never knew existed. My journey taught me that while grief may change us forever, it can also become the foundation upon which we build a stronger, wiser, and more meaningful life.
