From Grief and Loss to Health and Happiness

Life has a way of changing us in ways we never expect. Sometimes those changes come through joyful moments, but other times they come through heartbreak, loss, and experiences that leave us questioning everything we once believed about our future. If someone had told me years ago that one day I would become healthier, happier, and stronger because of the hardest season of my life, I never would have believed them. At that time, I couldn’t imagine anything good coming from the pain I was carrying. Yet today, as I look back on my journey, I realize that healing didn’t erase my grief—it taught me how to live alongside it. My path from grief and loss to health and happiness wasn’t easy, but it transformed my life in ways I never imagined.

My story began in 2015 when I received news that completely changed my future. After medical testing, I was diagnosed with infertility. My doctor explained that conceiving naturally would likely never happen. Those words shattered one of my biggest dreams. I had always imagined becoming a mother, building a family, celebrating birthdays, reading bedtime stories, and watching my children grow. Suddenly, that future no longer felt certain.

Even though I was heartbroken, I refused to give up. I believed IVF treatment could help me achieve the dream I had held onto for so long. I entered every treatment cycle with hope, convinced that the next appointment, the next procedure, or the next phone call might finally bring good news.

Instead, the next seven years became one of the most emotionally exhausting chapters of my life. My calendar revolved around fertility clinics, blood tests, hormone injections, medications, surgeries, ultrasounds, and endless waiting. Every IVF cycle began with hope and ended with uncertainty or disappointment. Infertility became much more than a medical diagnosis. It slowly affected my confidence, my emotional well-being, and even the way I viewed myself.

While I was still fighting that battle, life brought another devastating loss.

In 2017, my mother passed away from heart disease.

She was more than my mother. She was my greatest supporter, my closest friend, and the person who always reminded me that I was stronger than I believed. Losing her while I was already struggling with infertility created a level of grief that felt impossible to describe. There were countless moments when I wished she could still sit beside me during appointments or simply remind me that everything would somehow be okay.

Even through that pain, I kept moving forward because I still believed my miracle would come.

Then, in 2019, after years of IVF treatments and countless prayers, I finally became pregnant. I was told I was expecting a baby girl. For the first time in years, I allowed myself to imagine the future again. I pictured holding my daughter, watching her grow, celebrating birthdays, and introducing her to the stories of the grandmother she would never get to meet.

Then came the appointment that changed everything.

During a routine ultrasound, my doctor quietly explained that there was no heartbeat.

No words can fully describe what that moment felt like.

Losing my baby wasn’t simply losing a pregnancy. It felt like losing years of hope, dreams, sacrifices, and emotional investment all at once. I wasn’t only grieving my daughter—I was grieving the future I had spent seven years trying to build.

After that loss, I felt emotionally exhausted. Anxiety became part of my everyday life. Depression slowly took away my motivation. Years of hormone medications, emotional eating, stress, and grief affected my physical health as well. My weight reached 195 pounds, and I barely recognized the woman looking back at me in the mirror. I wasn’t simply carrying extra weight—I was carrying years of emotional pain that had never been given the chance to heal.

Even then, I continued IVF treatments because I couldn’t let go of the dream I had pursued for so long. I believed one more attempt might change everything.

Instead, life forced me to stop.

After suffering a severe allergic reaction to one of my hormone medications, I found myself sitting in an emergency room reflecting on everything that had happened over the previous seven years. That experience changed my perspective. For the first time, I realized I had spent years trying to create one version of my future while completely neglecting myself.

I had been fighting so hard for one dream that I forgot my own health mattered too.

That realization became the turning point in my life.

On November 27, 2022, I made a decision that would eventually change everything. I couldn’t erase infertility. I couldn’t bring my mother back. I couldn’t undo the loss of my daughter. But I could decide that those experiences would no longer define every chapter of my future.

My healing journey began with small decisions instead of dramatic changes. I started working with a registered dietitian and completed a medically supervised detox program. More importantly, I began rebuilding my relationship with food. Instead of eating to comfort emotional pain, I learned to nourish my body with kindness, patience, and consistency.

In January 2023, I joined a gym and began working with a personal trainer. At first, every workout felt difficult. My body was weak, my confidence was low, and there were many days when I wanted to stay home. But I continued showing up because I realized that healing isn’t about feeling motivated every day. It’s about choosing yourself even on the days when progress feels invisible.

As the weeks passed, exercise became much more than a way to lose weight. It became therapy. It gave me a healthy outlet for grief, stress, and frustration. Every workout reminded me that although my heart had been broken, I was still capable of becoming stronger.

A few months later, I discovered Aquabike classes, and everything began to change. I found an encouraging community that celebrated every milestone, no matter how small. Fitness stopped feeling like punishment and became something I genuinely enjoyed. For the first time in years, I wasn’t simply surviving—I was growing.

As my confidence increased, I decided to become a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. Looking back, that decision still amazes me. The woman who had once spent years sitting in fertility clinics hoping someone could help her rebuild her future was now helping other people improve their health, build confidence, and believe in themselves.

Helping others became part of my own healing.

On November 27, 2022, I weighed 195 pounds. Three years later, on November 27, 2025, I weighed 125 pounds. Losing 70 pounds was an incredible accomplishment, but it wasn’t my greatest victory. The greatest transformation happened inside me. I rebuilt my confidence, learned to trust myself again, and discovered that my value was never determined by the hardships I experienced.

Today, I still miss my mother, and I will always carry love for the daughter I never had the chance to hold. Those losses remain part of my story because love never truly disappears. But grief no longer controls my future. Instead, it reminds me to appreciate every opportunity, every healthy day, and every chance I have to encourage someone else who may be struggling.

Looking back now, I realize that health and happiness didn’t arrive because my life suddenly became perfect. They arrived because I stopped waiting for perfect circumstances before choosing to care for myself. I learned that happiness doesn’t require forgetting painful memories. It grows when we allow ourselves to heal while honoring the people and dreams we have lost.

My journey from grief and loss to health and happiness taught me that healing is possible, even after unimaginable heartbreak. It taught me that strength is built one decision at a time, that hope can survive even the darkest seasons, and that life can still be beautiful after it has been broken.

If my story offers one lesson, it is this: your hardest chapter does not have to become your final chapter. Even after loss, there is room for healing. Even after grief, there is space for joy. And even after believing everything has been taken from you, you can still build a life filled with health, purpose, gratitude, and genuine happiness.
