How I Reclaimed My Health and Happiness
There was a time when I thought getting my life back meant fixing everything that had gone wrong. I believed that if certain things changed, I would finally feel happy again. But after years of disappointment, grief, emotional exhaustion, and struggling with my health, I slowly realized that happiness was not something I could simply wait for. I had to reclaim it. I had to make a conscious decision to take care of myself again, even when life had not turned out the way I had hoped. My journey to reclaim my health and happiness did not happen overnight. It began with one decision, followed by countless small choices that eventually changed my life.
For years, my focus had been on surviving difficult circumstances. I experienced seasons filled with uncertainty and emotional pain that left me exhausted. There were hopes I carried for a long time and disappointments that became increasingly difficult to process. I experienced loss, and I spent years trying to understand how to move forward while carrying emotions that were sometimes too heavy to explain. During those years, I became so focused on what I could not change that I forgot to ask myself how I was doing.
My physical health eventually reflected what I was experiencing emotionally. Stress and emotional eating became part of my life, and my weight continued to increase. At my heaviest, I reached 195 pounds. Looking in the mirror became difficult because I did not feel connected to the person I saw. I knew I wanted something different, but I also knew that simply losing weight would not solve everything. I needed to rebuild my relationship with myself first.
On November 27, 2022, I made one of the most important decisions of my life. I decided that I could no longer keep putting myself last. I decided to choose myself. It was not a decision to forget my past or pretend that the painful years had never happened. It was a decision to stop allowing those experiences to determine what happened next.
I began by focusing on my health in a more compassionate way. I worked with a registered dietitian and took steps toward improving my nutrition. Instead of looking for extreme solutions, I started learning how to create healthier habits that I could actually maintain. I began to understand that my body did not need punishment. It needed care, nourishment, movement, patience, and consistency.
One of the most important lessons I learned was that I could not hate myself into becoming healthier. I had to learn how to care about myself enough to make healthier choices. That changed the way I approached my entire transformation. Every healthy meal became an act of self-respect. Every workout became a promise to myself. Every time I chose a healthier option, I reminded myself that I was worth the effort.
In January 2023, I joined a gym and began working with a personal trainer. At first, the journey was not easy. There were days when I felt tired, unmotivated, or unsure of myself. But I continued showing up. I learned that motivation comes and goes, while consistency can carry you much further. I stopped expecting myself to be perfect and started focusing on simply doing something positive each day.
Then I discovered aquabike, and my relationship with fitness began to change completely. What had started as an effort to improve my physical health became a source of genuine happiness. I found an activity that I enjoyed. I found a community that made me feel welcome. I found energy, connection, and a reason to look forward to being active.
For the first time in a long time, fitness did not feel like something I had to force myself to do. It became something I wanted to do. That difference mattered. I began realizing that health is not only about what happens to your body. It is also about how you feel while living your life.
My journey eventually led me to become a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. That was a powerful moment for me because I never imagined that something I started for my own healing would eventually become part of my purpose. I went from struggling to take care of myself to helping create an environment where other people could experience movement and joy too.
As my health improved, my happiness began returning in ways I had not expected. I became more confident. I smiled more. I started believing that my future could contain things I had not yet imagined. I began looking at myself with more kindness instead of constantly focusing on what I thought was wrong with me.
My physical transformation was significant. Over time, I went from 195 pounds on November 27, 2022, to 125 pounds on November 27, 2025. Losing 70 pounds was something I was proud of, but the number on the scale was never the whole story. The deeper transformation was learning how to trust myself again.
I learned that reclaiming your health does not mean chasing perfection. There will always be difficult days. There will be meals that are not perfect, workouts that do not happen, unexpected setbacks, and moments when old emotions return. What matters is what you do afterward. I learned to stop seeing setbacks as proof that I had failed. Instead, I began seeing them as opportunities to practice getting back on track.
I also learned that happiness is not something that arrives only after you reach a certain goal. For years, I thought I would be happy when something specific happened. But eventually, I realized that happiness can exist during the journey. It can be found in a workout, a conversation, a healthy meal, music, laughter, community, or simply waking up and realizing that you are becoming someone you are proud of.
Reclaiming my health also meant reclaiming my identity. I was no longer only the woman who had experienced disappointment and loss. I became a woman who was learning, growing, teaching, moving, and creating a future. My past remained part of me, but it no longer had complete control over how I saw myself.
Today, I understand that taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is necessary. Choosing yourself does not mean you stop loving other people. It means you recognize that you deserve care too. You deserve to have energy. You deserve to feel comfortable in your body. You deserve to pursue happiness without feeling guilty about it.
My journey taught me that health and happiness are deeply connected, but neither is achieved through perfection. They are built through small, consistent choices and a willingness to keep beginning again.
I did not reclaim my health because my life suddenly became easy. I reclaimed it because I finally decided that my difficult past would not determine my future.
I reclaimed my happiness by giving myself permission to experience joy again.
And perhaps the greatest thing I reclaimed was not simply my health or my happiness. I reclaimed myself.
The woman who once felt lost began to recognize herself again. She learned to care for her body, protect her peace, believe in her future, and make space for happiness.
My journey is still continuing, but now I know something I did not know before: sometimes reclaiming your life begins with one simple decision—to believe that you are worth taking care of.
