My Long Road From Loss to Healing

My Long Road From Loss to Healing

Healing is rarely a straight path. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly doesn’t erase the pain of what came before. For me, healing was a long road filled with unexpected turns, difficult choices, moments of doubt, and small victories that slowly rebuilt my life. There was a time when I believed I would never recover from the losses I had experienced. I thought grief would always define me. Today, I understand that healing doesn’t mean forgetting the past. It means learning how to carry it while continuing to move forward. My journey from loss to healing was long, but it ultimately led me to a stronger, healthier, and more purposeful life than I ever imagined. My story began in 2015 when I was diagnosed with infertility. Hearing the doctor explain that conceiving naturally would likely never happen felt like one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life. Becoming a mother had always been one of my greatest dreams, and suddenly that dream seemed uncertain. I left the doctor’s office devastated, but I refused to lose hope. I believed IVF treatment would help me build the family I had always wanted, so I committed myself to that journey with determination and faith. The following seven years became one of the most emotionally exhausting periods of my life. My schedule revolved around fertility clinics, blood tests, hormone injections, medications, surgeries, ultrasounds, and endless waiting. Every IVF cycle began with hope, and every setback tested my emotional strength. Infertility affected far more than my ability to become pregnant. It influenced my confidence, my relationships, my mental health, and my sense of identity. Then, in 2019, after years of treatments and prayers, I finally received the news I had waited so long to hear. I was pregnant. It felt as though every sacrifice had finally been rewarded. I was told I was expecting a baby girl, and for the first time in years, I allowed myself to dream without fear. I imagined decorating her room, celebrating birthdays, reading bedtime stories, and watching her grow into an amazing young woman. Those dreams filled my heart with hope and excitement. Sadly, those dreams ended during a routine ultrasound appointment when my doctor gently explained that there was no heartbeat. Losing my baby became the deepest heartbreak I had ever experienced. It wasn’t simply the loss of a pregnancy. It felt like losing years of hope, sacrifice, and dreams in a single moment. I struggled to understand how life could change so dramatically in such a short period of time. As devastating as losing my baby was, I was already carrying another tremendous loss. In 2017, I lost my mother to heart disease. She had always been my greatest supporter, my closest friend, and the person who believed in me no matter what challenges I faced. Losing her left a space in my heart that has never completely disappeared. Throughout my fertility journey, there were countless moments when I wished I could hear her reassuring voice or receive one more comforting hug. The emotional weight of those losses slowly affected every area of my life. Anxiety became constant, depression took away my motivation, and years of hormone treatments, emotional eating, and stress affected my physical health. My weight increased to 195 pounds, I constantly felt exhausted, and I no longer recognized the woman looking back at me in the mirror. Looking back now, I understand that I wasn’t simply carrying extra weight—I was carrying years of emotional pain that had never truly been addressed. Even after losing my baby, I continued IVF treatments because letting go of my dream felt impossible. Then one unexpected event changed everything. After suffering a severe allergic reaction to one of my hormone medications, I was rushed to the emergency room. Sitting there, reflecting on everything I had experienced over the previous seven years, I realized I had spent so much time trying to create the future I wanted that I had forgotten to take care of myself. I had invested every ounce of energy into becoming a mother while neglecting the woman I already was. That realization became the beginning of my healing journey. On November 27, 2022, I made the most important decision of my life. I chose to stop allowing grief to define every chapter of my future. I couldn’t change my infertility. I couldn’t bring back my mother or my daughter. But I could choose to rebuild my health, my confidence, and my life one step at a time. I decided that healing would become my new goal. The first step was working with a registered dietitian who helped me understand that lasting transformation begins with consistent daily habits rather than extreme changes. I completed a medically supervised detox program and gradually rebuilt my relationship with food. Instead of using food to comfort emotional pain, I learned how to nourish my body with patience, respect, and kindness. In January 2023, I joined a gym and began working with a personal trainer. The beginning wasn’t easy. There were mornings when grief still followed me into every workout, and motivation was difficult to find. But I kept showing up because I discovered that consistency matters far more than motivation. Every workout reminded me that healing isn’t achieved in one dramatic moment. It happens through thousands of small decisions to keep moving forward. A few months later, I discovered Aquabike classes, and everything began changing. I found an encouraging community that celebrated every success and supported me through every setback. Fitness became much more than exercise. It became therapy, confidence, stress relief, and hope. Every class helped me release not only physical weight but also years of emotional pain that I had carried for far too long. As my confidence continued growing, I challenged myself to become a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. Looking back now, I still find it remarkable how much my life has changed. The woman who once spent years sitting in fertility clinics hoping for good news now spends her days helping other people become healthier, stronger, and more confident. Helping others discover their own strength has become one of the greatest blessings of my life. On November 27, 2022, I weighed 195 pounds. Three years later, on November 27, 2025, I weighed 125 pounds. Losing 70 pounds was an incredible accomplishment, but it wasn’t the greatest transformation I experienced. The greatest transformation happened inside me. I learned that healing doesn’t mean forgetting the people we love or pretending painful experiences never happened. Healing means learning to carry those memories with love while refusing to let them stop us from living fully. Today, I still miss my mother every day, and I will always carry love for the daughter I never had the chance to hold. Their memories remain a cherished part of my story, but they no longer define my future. Instead, they inspire me to live with gratitude, compassion, resilience, and purpose. My road from loss to healing was long, and there were many moments when I questioned whether I would ever find peace again. But every difficult step taught me something valuable. Healing is possible. Hope can survive heartbreak. And sometimes the life we rebuild after loss becomes stronger, richer, and more meaningful than we ever imagined. My journey proves that although pain may shape us, it never has to become the final chapter of our story.
