My Story of Loss, Growth, and Self-Discovery
There are certain experiences in life that change you so deeply that you never return to the person you were before them. For me, loss became one of those experiences. It taught me about grief, disappointment, patience, and the parts of myself I had never taken the time to understand. For years, I felt as though I was simply trying to survive one difficult chapter after another. I experienced moments when my hopes were shattered, when people and circumstances I loved were taken away from me, and when I struggled to recognize myself beneath all the emotional weight I was carrying. Looking back now, I realize that those experiences were painful, but they also became the beginning of my growth and self-discovery.
My story of loss began long before I understood how much it would affect me. I spent years hoping for something deeply important to me and going through difficult experiences that tested my emotional strength. There were moments of excitement and hope, followed by disappointment that felt impossible to explain. Each time I tried to move forward, another setback seemed to appear. I kept telling myself to be strong, but being strong became exhausting when I never had enough time to recover from one disappointment before facing another.
Losing my mother in 2017 was another devastating chapter in my life. Grief changed me in ways I could not immediately understand. Losing someone you love reminds you that life can change without warning. It leaves an emptiness that cannot simply be filled by staying busy or pretending everything is fine. I carried that grief with me while continuing to face other personal struggles. Sometimes I looked okay from the outside while feeling completely overwhelmed on the inside. I learned that grief does not always have a visible face, and people can be fighting battles that others never see.
My journey through infertility and IVF also brought years of emotional uncertainty. I experienced hope, fear, disappointment, and exhaustion repeatedly. When I became pregnant through IVF in 2019, I believed that perhaps the difficult chapter was finally changing. But after an ultrasound showed that there was no heartbeat, I experienced a loss that was incredibly difficult to process. It was not only the loss itself that hurt. It was the loss of the future I had imagined and the dreams I had already started building in my heart.
After years of treatments, stress, grief, and emotional exhaustion, I slowly became disconnected from myself. I struggled with emotional eating and unhealthy habits, and my weight eventually reached 195 pounds. But the number on the scale was never the whole story. It represented years of emotions I had not known how to process and pain I had carried for too long. I was not simply trying to lose weight. I was trying to find my way back to myself.
The turning point came on November 27, 2022. I realized that I could not continue living as though my past had already decided my future. I could not change what had happened, but I could change what I chose to do next. For the first time in a long time, I decided to choose myself. That decision was not about becoming perfect. It was about becoming present in my own life again.
I began seeking healthier ways to care for myself. I worked with a registered dietitian and completed a medically supervised detox program. In January 2023, I joined a gym and started working with a personal trainer. At first, I thought the goal was simply physical transformation. But as I continued, I realized that something much deeper was happening. Every workout, every healthier meal, and every decision to keep going was teaching me that I could trust myself again.
One of the most important things I discovered during this process was that growth rarely happens all at once. It happens through small decisions repeated over time. Some days were easier than others. There were moments when I felt motivated and moments when I wanted to give up. But I learned not to measure my progress only by how I felt on a particular day. I learned to keep moving forward even when the results were not immediately visible.
Then I discovered aquabike classes, and they brought something unexpected into my life: happiness. Fitness stopped feeling like a punishment and became something I genuinely enjoyed. The community, movement, energy, and connection helped me rediscover a part of myself that had been buried under years of stress and sadness. Eventually, I became a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. What began as part of my personal transformation became connected to a new sense of purpose.
Through this journey, I discovered that self-discovery is not about finding a completely new person. Sometimes it is about remembering who you were before life convinced you that you had to become someone else. I began discovering qualities within myself that I had overlooked for years. I found resilience, discipline, patience, confidence, and compassion. I learned to speak to myself with kindness instead of criticism.
My physical transformation became another part of that journey. Between November 27, 2022, and November 27, 2025, I went from 195 pounds to 125 pounds, losing 70 pounds. I am proud of that achievement, but the number is not what defines my transformation. The greatest change happened internally. I learned how to take care of myself without shame. I learned that my body deserved respect at every stage. I learned that progress is not about becoming worthy of love; it is about recognizing that you were worthy all along.
Loss taught me that life can be unpredictable. Growth taught me that I can still choose how I respond. Self-discovery taught me that there was more strength inside me than I had ever realized. These lessons did not erase my past, but they changed the way I carried it.
Today, I understand that healing is not about forgetting the people, dreams, or experiences I lost. It is about allowing those experiences to become part of my story without allowing them to control the rest of it. I can remember what hurt me and still be grateful for where I am today. I can honor my losses while continuing to grow. I can acknowledge the difficult chapters without believing that my entire life has to remain difficult.
My story of loss, growth, and self-discovery is still being written. I know there may be challenges ahead, but I no longer face the future with the same fear I once carried. I have learned that starting over is possible, even after years of disappointment. I have learned that healing can lead to strength, and strength can lead to purpose.
Most importantly, I discovered that losing parts of my old life did not mean losing myself forever. Somewhere beneath the grief, disappointment, and exhaustion, I was still there. I simply needed to give myself permission to find her again.
