The Day Everything Fell Apart—and Came Together

The Day Everything Fell Apart—and Came Together

There are moments in life when everything seems to change at once. Sometimes they arrive quietly, and sometimes they arrive with so much pain that you cannot imagine how you will ever feel normal again. For me, there were years when it felt as though one difficult thing followed another. I was trying to hold on to hope while carrying grief, disappointment, uncertainty, and exhaustion. At the time, I thought those experiences were breaking my life apart. Looking back now, I realize they were also forcing me to rebuild it in a completely different way. For years, becoming a mother was one of the deepest dreams in my heart. My journey with infertility began around 2015, and what I initially believed would be a temporary challenge became a long and emotionally exhausting chapter of my life. I went through fertility treatments and IVF, holding on to hope each time I started again. Every treatment came with another possibility, another reason to believe that perhaps this time things would finally work out. But hope can become complicated when it is repeatedly followed by disappointment. There were moments when I felt strong and optimistic, and there were other moments when I wondered how much more my heart could take. Infertility affected me in ways I never expected. It was not only about medical appointments or treatments. It affected my emotions, my confidence, my relationships, and the way I imagined my future. Then, in 2017, I lost my mother to heart disease. Losing her was one of the most painful experiences of my life. She was someone I wanted beside me through the important chapters of my life, and suddenly I had to learn how to continue without her. Grief became another weight I carried while still trying to navigate infertility. In 2019, I finally experienced the kind of hope I had been waiting for. I became pregnant through IVF. For a while, I allowed myself to imagine the future again. I allowed myself to believe that perhaps after all the waiting and disappointment, this chapter would finally have a happy ending. But during an ultrasound, I learned that there was no heartbeat. There are some moments that divide your life into a before and an after. That was one of them. I had lost the pregnancy, and with it came a kind of heartbreak that was difficult to explain. I had already spent years hoping to become a mother, and when that hope finally seemed within reach, it disappeared. I continued with treatments afterward, but emotionally, I was becoming exhausted. Eventually, everything began affecting my physical health as well. Years of stress, grief, hormonal treatments, and emotional eating contributed to significant weight gain. My weight reached 195 pounds. Looking back, I realize that I was not simply gaining physical weight. I was carrying years of emotional pain inside my body. There was a time when I felt as though my life had become a collection of things that had gone wrong. I had lost my mother. I had lost a pregnancy. I was struggling with infertility. My health had changed. My confidence had changed. And somewhere along the way, I had lost sight of myself. Then came a moment when I realized I could not keep waiting for life to become different before I allowed myself to live. On November 27, 2022, I made a decision that changed the direction of my life. I decided to choose myself. It was not a magical moment when everything suddenly became easy. It was simply a decision to stop abandoning myself. I decided that regardless of what I could or could not control, I could still choose how I cared for myself and how I moved forward. I began working with a registered dietitian and completed a medically supervised detox program. In January 2023, I joined a gym and started working with a personal trainer. At first, I was focused on becoming healthier, but slowly, the journey became about much more than weight loss. I began discovering what it felt like to keep promises to myself. Every workout reminded me that I was capable of doing difficult things. Every healthy choice reminded me that I was worth taking care of. Every small improvement gave me confidence that had nothing to do with anyone else’s approval. I eventually discovered aquabike classes, and something unexpected happened. Exercise became something I genuinely enjoyed. I found a community where I could laugh, connect, move, and simply enjoy being present. What began as part of my health journey eventually led me to become a certified Aquabike fitness instructor. The woman who once felt defined by infertility was discovering an identity beyond it. Between November 27, 2022, and November 27, 2025, I lost 70 pounds, going from 195 pounds to 125 pounds. But when people see the physical transformation, they may not see the emotional transformation that happened underneath it. The biggest change was not the number on the scale. It was the way I saw myself. I learned that I could not hate myself into becoming healthier. I had to learn how to care about myself enough to make healthier choices. I stopped seeing my body as something I needed to punish and started seeing it as something I needed to respect. I also learned that healing is not linear. Some days are easier than others. There are memories that still hurt. There are questions that may never have answers. But healing does not require us to erase our past. It requires us to stop allowing our past to control our future. For a long time, I thought the day everything fell apart was the day my life became smaller. Now I see it differently. Those painful experiences forced me to look at parts of myself I had ignored. They made me realize that I could not keep putting my entire life on hold while waiting for one dream to come true. Everything falling apart eventually gave me a reason to put the pieces back together differently. I learned that life can hold grief and happiness at the same time. I can miss my mother and still smile. I can remember my pregnancy loss and still be grateful for the life I am building. I can acknowledge the pain of infertility without allowing it to define my worth. The past will always be part of my story, but it is no longer the author of my future. Today, I do not look at my journey and wish that none of it had happened. Of course, I wish some chapters had been different. I wish I had experienced less loss and less heartbreak. But I also recognize the strength, compassion, courage, and self-love that grew from those experiences. Sometimes the day everything falls apart is not the end of your story. Sometimes it is the day you finally begin putting yourself back together. And sometimes, when you look back years later, you realize that the life you built afterward is not the life you originally planned—but it can still be beautiful, meaningful, healthy, and full of purpose. My life did not come together because everything went according to plan. It came together because, after everything fell apart, I finally decided that I was worth rebuilding.
