The Power of Choosing Yourself

The Power of Choosing Yourself

For a long time, I thought choosing myself was selfish. I believed I had to keep waiting, keep trying, keep pleasing others, and keep holding onto the life I had imagined, even when that life was slowly exhausting me. I thought strength meant continuing no matter how much I was hurting. But eventually, I learned one of the most important lessons of my life: choosing yourself is not selfish. Sometimes, choosing yourself is the first step toward healing. My journey to understanding this was not easy. There were years when I felt like my life was being controlled by circumstances I could not change. I had dreams, expectations, and plans for my future, but life did not always follow the path I had imagined. With every disappointment, I felt a little more disconnected from myself. I became so focused on what I wanted to happen that I forgot to ask myself how I was actually doing. There came a point when I was physically and emotionally exhausted. I had spent so much time fighting for things outside of my control that I had forgotten how to take care of the person who was doing all the fighting: me. That realization changed everything. Choosing myself did not mean giving up on my dreams. It meant understanding that my entire identity could not depend on whether those dreams happened exactly as I imagined. It meant realizing that I deserved a life filled with peace, health, confidence, and happiness even if my journey looked different from what I had originally planned. On November 27, 2022, I reached a moment where I knew I had to make a different choice. I could continue living in disappointment and allowing my past to define me, or I could start rebuilding my life. I chose myself. That decision did not magically make everything better. There was no overnight transformation. Instead, I started with small choices. I began paying attention to my health. I sought professional guidance and started making changes that were realistic and sustainable. I began moving my body more, taking better care of myself, and slowly rebuilding the relationship I had with my own body. At first, those changes were difficult. When you have spent years being disappointed in yourself, learning to treat yourself with kindness can feel unfamiliar. I had to stop believing that punishment was the answer. I learned that I could not hate myself into becoming healthier. I had to care about myself enough to make healthier choices. That was a completely different way of thinking. Exercise became more than a way to change my appearance. It became a way to reconnect with myself. In January 2023, I joined a gym and started working with a personal trainer. Eventually, I discovered aquabike classes, and something unexpected happened. I found joy again. The classes gave me more than physical activity. They gave me community, connection, encouragement, and confidence. I began looking forward to showing up. I started discovering a version of myself who was not defined by loss or disappointment. Eventually, my passion for aquabike fitness became so meaningful that I became a certified instructor. Looking back, I realize that choosing myself was not one decision. It was thousands of small decisions repeated over time. It was choosing to get out of bed when I wanted to stay stuck. It was choosing healthier habits instead of giving up. It was choosing movement instead of constantly criticizing my body. It was choosing rest when I needed it. It was choosing people and environments that encouraged me. Most importantly, it was choosing to believe that my future could still be beautiful. My physical transformation became one of the visible results of those choices. Over time, I lost a significant amount of weight and became stronger and healthier. But the number on the scale was never the greatest achievement. The greatest achievement was becoming someone I trusted again. I learned how powerful consistency can be. I learned that you do not have to completely change your life in one day. Sometimes, transformation begins with one small decision: deciding that you deserve better. Choosing yourself also taught me about boundaries. For years, I believed being strong meant carrying everything quietly. I thought I had to be available for everyone and keep everything together. But healing taught me that protecting your peace is important. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to step away from situations that constantly drain you. You are allowed to make decisions based on what is healthy for you. That does not make you uncaring. It makes you human. I also learned that choosing yourself does not mean you stop loving other people. In fact, I believe it can help you love others in a healthier way. When you constantly abandon yourself to make everyone else comfortable, resentment and exhaustion eventually build. But when you understand your own needs and respect your own boundaries, you can show up for others without completely losing yourself. Perhaps the hardest part of choosing myself was accepting that I could not change the past. There are things I wish had happened differently. There are moments I wish I could go back and rewrite. There are losses I will always remember. But I eventually understood that living in the past would not give me back what I had lost. The only thing I could control was what I did with the life I still had. So I stopped asking, “Why did this happen to me?” and started asking, “What can I build from here?” That question gave me a different kind of strength. Today, I understand that choosing yourself is not about becoming perfect. It is about becoming honest with yourself. It is recognizing when you are tired, when you need help, when something is no longer healthy, and when it is time to create a new direction. It is about understanding that your worth does not disappear because life did not go according to plan. Your worth is still there. Your future is still there. And there is still a version of you waiting to be discovered. If I have learned anything from my journey, it is that sometimes the person you have been waiting for to save you is yourself. Not because you have to do everything alone, but because you have to make the decision to take your life seriously, care for yourself, and believe that you deserve a better chapter. Choosing myself changed the way I see my life. I no longer see self-care as something optional. I no longer believe that my needs should always come last. I no longer measure my worth by the things I could not control. I choose myself because I finally understand that I am worth choosing. And if you are reading this while feeling lost, exhausted, or disconnected from yourself, I hope you remember this: you do not have to have everything figured out before you begin again. Start with one choice. Choose yourself today. Then choose yourself again tomorrow. Sometimes, those small choices become the beginning of an entirely different life.
